In Ethiopia, we visited hospitals that six months ago did not have lifesaving AIDS drugs but now do thanks to the President’s Emergency AIDS plan and other efforts. There is an encouraging sense throughout Ethiopia that efforts to combat AIDS are beginning to work. American help is supporting African efforts to fight back against AIDS and extreme poverty.

As Bono from U2 was making a connection between the 1948 Declaration of Human Rights and the One Campaign, my mind drifted to Iraq.

I’m not 100% sure that we went into Iraq with all of the information we should have but I get the feeling that anti-Iraq-war protesters have selective memory when it comes to human rights in Saddam’s Iraq.

As promised, here is article 1 from the Declaration of Human Rights:

Article 1.

All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.

I placed a banner about the One Campaign on the side bar of this web site. If you believe in the words of Article 1, take a moment to check out it out.

The ONE Campaign is a new effort to rally Americans to fight the emergency of global AIDS and extreme poverty. Each ONE of us can make a difference. Together as ONE we can change the world.

After living in the United States for 35 years, roughly half of that time attending school, it took a U2 concert to alert me to this 1948 declaration:

On December 10, 1948 the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights the full text of which appears in the following pages. Following this historic act the Assembly called upon all Member countries to publicize the text of the Declaration and "to cause it to be disseminated, displayed, read and expounded principally in schools and other educational institutions, without distinction based on the political status of countries or territories."

PREAMBLE

Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world,

Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people,

Whereas it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law,

Whereas it is essential to promote the development of friendly relations between nations,

Whereas the peoples of the United Nations have in the Charter reaffirmed their faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person and in the equal rights of men and women and have determined to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,

Whereas Member States have pledged themselves to achieve, in co-operation with the United Nations, the promotion of universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms,

Whereas a common understanding of these rights and freedoms is of the greatest importance for the full realization of this pledge,

Now, Therefore THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY proclaims THIS UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of Member States themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction.

I will be posting the articles (1-30) in the coming weeks as a semi-regular feature here and at my MLM Blog.

I like this idea. It sounds kind of like Starbucks with white boards and and LCD projectors.

"With three themed rooms, two with the capacity for 30 Ideators and one for groups up to 70, Idea Sandbox will be chock-full of visual, aural, tactile and mental stimulation. Rooms will be outfitted with practical high-touch tools such as white boards, flip charts, Play-Doh and toys… Required-tech tools will include… LCD projectors, DVD/VCR players, Wi-Fi Internet access, and satellite radio. Our kitchen will be stocked with food for thought and creative juices – tasty snacks and crisp drinks to keep the ideas flowing.

Ideators may book single or multiple rooms on a half-day basis (under 4 hours) or for the full day (4 to 8 hours).

The primary way solutions will be generated will be through facilitated brainstorming sessions… Where Ideators are guided through the various stages of ideation – from ‘blue sky’ to the ‘fewer, bigger, better’ list of actionable ideas. Alternately, Ideators may choose free-range sessions and use the inspiring Idea Sandbox space for brainstorming, planning sessions and team building activities.

Hopefully that’s enough to whet your appetite… Let’s see how this experiment goes! I look forward to your feedback!"

The Idea Sandbox will be based in Seattle (yeah!) and you can offer Paul at the Brand Autopsy Blog your comments and feedback here.
